IPL 2025 Retention Updates : MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli retained; Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer released ahead of mega auction.

Franchises have officially disclosed their lists of retained players in anticipation of the IPL 2025 auction. Royal Challengers Bengaluru has retained Virat Kohli for a sum of Rs 21 crore; however, his record for the highest retention amount in IPL history has been surpassed by Heinrich Klaasen.

IPL 2025 Retention Updates

The wicketkeeper-batter has been retained by SunRisers Hyderabad for an impressive Rs 23 crore, establishing him as the most expensive player ever retained in the IPL. Previously, Kohli held the record with a retention amount of Rs 17 crore. It is also noteworthy that three prominent captains—Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer—will be available in the IPL auction. In a related development, Mumbai Indians have released Ishan Kishan, while Chennai Super Kings have retained MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore.

Mo Bobat, the Director of Cricket for RCB, stated, “We recognize the importance of building a robust Indian core for our team as we approach the 2025 IPL season. Our retention choices mark a crucial advancement in this endeavor. It is wonderful to extend Virat’s long-standing relationship with RCB; I am confident that a new cohort of players will greatly benefit from his inspiring and dynamic presence, as well as his dedication to maintaining high standards. Additionally, we are pleased to have secured both Rajat and Yash, who bring distinct skills and talents to the team. In Yash’s case, as an uncapped player, he also represents exceptional financial value. It is always difficult to part ways with players, considering the strong bonds formed and the numerous shared successes and memories; I wish all departing players the best in their future endeavors. Moving forward, we will begin our auction preparations, having retained top Indian talent while also ensuring we have options and flexibility with our three remaining RTMs and a healthy budget. It promises to be an exciting time!”
