West Bengal is poised for a major leap in its IT landscape as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) secures approval for a sprawling 20-acre campus in the Bengal Silicon Valley Hub, New Town, Kolkata. Announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on June 24, 2025, this ambitious project promises to create 25,000 direct jobs, reinforcing the state’s emergence as a vibrant hub for innovation and investment.

A Game-Changing Development

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has greenlit the Phase I building plan, marking a significant milestone in Bengal’s push for IT-led growth. Phase I will feature 9 lakh square feet of cutting-edge infrastructure, including an 11-storey office tower, generating 5,000 jobs. Phase II will expand the campus by an additional 15 lakh square feet, adding 20,000 more positions. Upon completion, the campus will span 24 lakh square feet, making it one of the region’s largest IT facilities.

“I am pleased to share that NKDA has sanctioned the Phase-I building plan for the TCS office campus at Bengal Silicon Valley,” Banerjee shared in a post on X. “Bengal is emerging as a hub of innovation, investment, and inclusive growth. Bengal means business, and the world is taking note.”

This announcement comes at a critical juncture, following a Supreme Court verdict in April 2025 that canceled 26,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs in state-aided schools, sparking concerns about employment in the state. The TCS campus is a bold response, showcasing Bengal’s capacity to deliver large-scale economic opportunities.

TCS’s Strong Foothold in Bengal

TCS is no stranger to West Bengal, already employing over 55,000 professionals across multiple offices in the state. Its largest campus, Gitanjali Park in New Town, houses around 25,000 employees. The new Bengal Silicon Valley campus builds on this foundation, aligning with TCS’s nationwide expansion strategy, which includes investments of over ₹4,500 crore in cities like Bengaluru, Kochi, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, and Visakhapatnam.

The company’s robust financial performance in FY25—$30.18 billion in revenue, a 4.2% growth in constant currency, and a net profit of ₹48,797 crore—underpins its confidence in this expansion. With a workforce of 607,979 and a stable attrition rate of 13.3%, TCS is well-positioned to drive growth in Bengal’s IT sector.

“TCS’s new campus is fantastic news for Bengal,” said Kalyan Kar, Vice President of the Sector V Stakeholders Association. “It signals TCS’s growth trajectory and validates the state’s talent pool, encouraging other companies to invest here.”

Bengal Silicon Valley: A Tech Ecosystem in the Making

Launched in 2018, the Bengal Silicon Valley Hub spans 200 acres in New Town’s Action Area II, strategically located near Kolkata International Airport. It has attracted major players like Reliance Jio, Cognizant, Capgemini, and Infosys, with investments in IT services, data centers, and digital consulting. The hub is projected to generate 75,000 jobs and attract ₹27,000 crore in investments, cementing Kolkata’s role as a key player in India’s tech ecosystem.

TCS was among the first companies to secure land in the hub, and this new campus will enhance its capacity to serve global clients while fostering local talent. The project aligns with West Bengal’s broader vision of transforming New Town into a state-of-the-art tech destination, with 91.8% occupancy across its 22 IT parks as of December 2024.

A Bright Future for Bengal’s IT Sector

The TCS campus is more than just a job creator; it’s a testament to Bengal’s growing appeal to global investors. Banerjee’s government has prioritized a business-friendly environment, offering clear policies and infrastructure to support IT growth. The chief minister’s recent rebuttal to critics—“To those who relentlessly malign Bengal, let this be a reminder of our capacity to deliver”—underscores the state’s determination to silence doubters with tangible progress.

As construction begins, the TCS campus is set to redefine Kolkata’s IT landscape, creating opportunities for thousands of professionals and inspiring confidence in Bengal’s tech future. With its world-class infrastructure and strategic vision, Bengal Silicon Valley is proving that when it comes to innovation, Bengal truly means business.
