Apple Unveils Next-Generation CarPlay Ultra

On Thursday, Apple introduced CarPlay Ultra, the next evolution of its in-car infotainment system designed for seamless smartphone integration while driving. Building on the current CarPlay platform, CarPlay Ultra offers deeper integration with the vehicle, bringing enhanced control and customization features across multiple screens.

Key Features of CarPlay Ultra

Apple describes CarPlay Ultra as the “ultimate in-car experience,” designed to provide real-time information across all driver screens. It supports advanced visuals in the instrument cluster, including customizable elements like the speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, and temperature gauges. Drivers can also display navigation, media, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) directly within the cluster.

CarPlay Ultra gives drivers the ability to control not just music and navigation, but also vehicle-specific settings like climate control, radio, audio system configurations, and performance modes. These can be managed via touchscreens, physical buttons, or Siri voice commands. Widgets powered by the iPhone can be placed on both the main display and instrument cluster for easy access to information.

Another standout feature is customizability. Automakers can collaborate with Apple to create branded themes that align with their unique design languages. At the same time, drivers can personalize the interface with custom colors and wallpapers.

CarPlay Ultra is now available in Aston Martin’s core models, including the DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish, with new vehicle orders starting in the U.S. and Canada. Global rollout is expected within the next 12 months. Existing compatible vehicles will receive CarPlay Ultra via a software update at dealerships.

What is Apple CarPlay?

Apple CarPlay lets you connect your iPhone to a compatible in-car entertainment system, mirroring essential apps like maps, music, and phone dialer on your car’s display. CarPlay Ultra takes this further with full-screen integration, personalization options, and expanded controls — all designed to enhance usability while minimizing driver distraction.
