Grammy Nomination 2025 Snubs & Surprises: André 3000’s flute-centered album secures an unexpected Album of the Year nomination, while Ariana Grande is notably absent from the top categories, along with other big surprises.

The Grammy Nominations 2025

There are several notable first-time nominees as well, including Sierra Ferrell, Doechii, and Morgan Wallen (who’s still yet to be nominated as a solo artist but did earn two nods for his hit with Post Malone.

The nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards have been announced, featuring prominent artists such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Kendrick Lamar vying for the most prestigious accolades of the upcoming year.

Beyoncé, propelled by her collaboration with Cowboy Carter, leads the nominations with a total of 11, achieving recognition in the three principal categories—Song, Record, and Album of the Year—as well as in four distinct genre categories: Country, Pop, Rap, and Americana. This achievement also positions Beyoncé as the most nominated artist in Grammy history, with a total of 99 nominations, surpassing the previous record of 88 that she shared with her husband, Jay-Z.

Kendrick Lamar is among four artists who received seven nominations, joining Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, and Post Malone. Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan each garnered six nominations.

In the Record of the Year category, Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” will compete against Carpenter’s “Espresso,” Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” as well as Swift and Post Malone’s “Fortnight,” Charli’s “360,” and Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” Notably, the category also features a significant surprise: The Beatles’ final song, “Now and Then,” which was released last year.

Numerous songs are vying for the Song of the Year title, including “Birds of a Feather,” “Fortnight,” “Texas Hold ‘Em,” “Not Like Us,” and “Good Luck, Babe!” This category will also feature Shaboozey’s crossover hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” the collaboration between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars titled “Die With a Smile,” and Carpenter’s additional 2024 release, “Please Please Please.”

In the Album of the Year category, André 3000 has received an unexpected nomination for his instrumental flute album, New Blue Sun. He will compete against Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, Charli’s Brat, Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol. 4.

Carpenter and Roan, who are undoubtedly the year’s most significant breakout artists, are leading the nominations for Best New Artist. They will face competition from Shaboozey, Benson Boone, Doechii, Raye, Teddy Swims, and Khruangbin. A prevailing question regarding the 2025 Grammys is whether this will be the year Beyoncé, the most decorated and nominated artist in the event’s history, secures her first major category award since 2010, when “Single Ladies” won Song of the Year. However, the competition remains fierce. Swift has won Album of the Year more than any other artist, with four victories, while both Eilish and André 3000 have also previously won in that category (the latter as part of Outkast).

Eilish has emerged as a prominent favorite among Recording Academy voters since her sweep of the “Big Four” awards in 2020. She has since added another Record and Song of the Year award to her accolades — the former for “Everything I Wanted” in 2021 and the latter for “What Was I Made For?” last year. Notably, Eilish is the first artist to have her first three albums nominated for Album of the Year.

André 3000’s instrumental flute album should not be disparaged; however, Grammy aficionados might be taken aback to find his recent work, “New Blue Sun,” competing in the top album category alongside Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, and Billie Eilish. If the Grammys are indeed a measure of popularity, then “New Blue Sun” represents a stark departure from commercial trends, embodying a serene essence akin to a sound bath experience. This nomination stands out as one of the most unexpected developments in the major categories, which typically favor the most commercially successful music from the eligibility period. “New Blue Sun” is more of a niche album, appreciated by those in the know. Nevertheless, Three Stacks has received recognition in other areas, with nominations for best alternative jazz album and best instrumental composition, where the competition appears to be more musically congruent.

The conversation regarding Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” commenced immediately upon its announcement: Is it classified as a country album? An Americana project? Or perhaps a completely new genre? Beyoncé’s ambitious endeavor seems to have garnered her not only the highest number of nominations this year (11, for those keeping track) but also recognition across various genre categories. In addition to competing for album of the year and both record and song of the year with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” she has received nominations in the pop, country, Americana, and rap categories. Among her nominations in the country and Americana genres are: “16 Carriages” (best country solo performance), “II Most Wanted” featuring Miley Cyrus (best country duo/group performance), “Texas Hold ‘Em” (best country song), “Ya Ya” (best Americana performance), and best country album. “Spaghettii” is nominated for best melodic rap performance, while “Bodyguard” is recognized in the best pop solo performance category, and “Levii’s Jeans” with Post Malone is nominated for best pop duo/group performance. It is noteworthy that Beyoncé received nearly all the nominations for which she applied, with the exception of “Tyrant,” which was considered for best R&B song. Nevertheless, she now boasts a total of 99 career nominations, making her the most nominated artist in Grammy history (previously sharing the record with her husband Jay-Z at 88), and she also holds the title for the most Grammy awards won. This year marks her inaugural nominations in the Country & Americana Roots music categories.

In the midst of the intensifying media attention surrounding her upcoming role in the film adaptation of “Wicked,” Ariana Grande released her seventh album, “Eternal Sunshine.” However, she chose not to promote it in a manner typical of a major release, likely to prevent excessive visibility prior to the film’s debut. Consequently, she has been exclusively categorized within the pop genre, earning nominations for best pop duo/group performance for “The Boy Is Mine” featuring Brandy and Monica, as well as for best pop vocal album and best dance pop recording for “Yes, And?”.

Monét, the recipient of last year’s best new artist award, and Mike achieved significant recognition earlier this year, with Monét securing three awards and Mike dominating the rap categories. This year, Monét entered the R&B categories with her sultry duet “S.O.S.” featuring Usher, while Mike submitted his recent work, “Michael & the Mighty Midnight Revival, Songs for Sinners and Saints,” along with the track “Humble Me.” However, despite their submissions, neither artist has been included on the ballot for the upcoming ceremony.

Zach Bryan’s decision not to submit his work for consideration this year is noteworthy. Earlier in the year, he received three nominations in the country music categories and won the award for best country duo/group performance for his collaboration with Kacey Musgraves on the song “I Remember Everything.” However, for the 2025 Grammy Awards, he opted out of the submission process entirely, resulting in his fifth album, “The Great American Bar Scene,” released on July 4, remaining unrecognized. Consequently, Bryan joins a distinguished and expanding list of artists, including Drake and the Weeknd, who have expressed disinterest in participating in the Grammy Awards in recent years.

Kendrick Lamar finds himself in a unique position, competing against his own work. This situation may not come as a surprise, as he consistently operates at an exceptional level. This year, despite the absence of a new album, he has garnered seven nominations, tying for the second-most alongside Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, and Post Malone. His track “Not Like Us,” which evolved from a diss track into an anthem, has received nominations for record of the year, song of the year, best music video, best rap performance, and best rap song. Notably, he will be competing against himself in the categories of best rap performance and best rap song, as his collaboration on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” is also nominated.

Jack Antonoff has been notably excluded from the nominees for Producer of the Year (non-classical) this year, a category he has dominated for the past three years, winning consecutively from 2022 to the present. His absence from the list of nominees, which includes Mustard, Daniel Nigro, Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II, Alissia, and Ian Fitchuk, comes as a significant surprise. This year was not a quiet one for Antonoff; he produced Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department,” which is nominated for Album of the Year, and also worked on projects for Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, and Gracie Abrams. Notably, Abrams is nominated for the song “Us.,” featuring Swift, in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, a track that Antonoff also produced. The reasons for his omission from the nominations remain unclear, though it is anticipated that he may still receive recognition for his collaborative efforts.
