9 injured in stampede at Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus amid Diwali rush.

Today, nine individuals sustained injuries in a stampede at Bandra Terminus in Mumbai as passengers attempted to board a train bound for Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The condition of seven individuals is reported to be stable, while two are in critical condition. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) indicated that the incident was triggered by the festive rush leading up to Diwali.

Stampede At Mumbai's Bandra Terminus

Train number 22921, which travels from Bandra to Gorakhpur, arrived at platform number 1, attracting a significant number of passengers eager to board. According to sources cited by NDTV, the weekly train to Gorakhpur had been rescheduled to depart at 5:10 am but arrived late at the platform. By approximately 3 am, a considerable crowd had formed, and as passengers attempted to board the general compartment, a stampede ensued. The Gorakhpur Express operates on an unreserved basis, and over 1,000 passengers were present to board the 22-bogey train. Some individuals even attempted to enter the coaches while the train was still moving, resulting in injuries to two passengers.

Visual evidence depicted blood on the ground, with injured individuals being transported on stretchers by Railway Police and fellow passengers. One video captured a Railway officer carrying an injured passenger on his shoulder, while another showed two men lying on the ground, bloodstains visible on their clothing. Two individuals rushed in with a stretcher to assist one of the injured. More than 50 police personnel were stationed at Platform 1 to manage the crowd effectively.

In the background, five individuals were seen assisting an injured person out of the station, utilizing a large piece of cloth as a makeshift stretcher.A man was also seen sitting on a bench, with his shirt torn off, and looked visibly in pain.

The BMC said in an update said the situation is under control at the terminus and the injured have been taken to Bhabha Hospital.

A passenger suffered a spinal fracture and a few passengers had fractures in their leg. Meanwhile, two injured have been discharged from the hospital, sources said.

Shahani and Noor Mohammad Sheikh were in critical condition and undergoing treatment at the hospital, a police official said.

Western Railway’s chief spokesperson Vineet Abhishek could not be reached for comments despite repeated attempts and there was no official statement so far from the WR’s public relations department.

The personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), along with local residents, promptly transported the injured individuals to Bhabha Hospital. The injured individuals have been identified as Shabhir Abdul Rehman (40), Parmeshwar Sukhdar Gupta (28), Ravindra Harihar Chuma (30), Ramsevak Ravindra Prasad Prajapati (29), Sanjay Tilakram Kangay (27), Divyanshu Yogendra Yadav (18), Mohammad Shareef Shaikh (25), Indrajith Sahani (19), and Noor Mohammad Shaikh (18), according to a civic official.
