BJP reverses stance: Will back Shiv Sena’s candidate Sarvankar over MNS in Mahim.

On November 5, the BJP made a significant announcement, stating its support for Shiv Sena candidate Sada Sarvankar in the Mahim constituency, rather than backing Amit Thackeray of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, who is the son of MNS leader Raj Thackeray.

This decision by the BJP follows Sarvankar’s refusal to withdraw his candidacy in favor of Thackeray, despite multiple requests to do so.

Sarvankar’s determination to contest the elections has compelled the BJP to align with him, in accordance with the principles of their alliance.

Additionally, this shift in the BJP’s stance has temporarily halted its attempts to incorporate the MNS into the Mahayuti coalition or to extend support to the MNS in other constituencies, particularly to counter the Shiv Sena UBT and the broader Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

With Sarvankar, a three-term legislator, in the race, the Mahim constituency is set for a competitive three-way contest against MNS candidate Amit Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Mahesh Sawant.

Regarding the Mahayuti coalition, Shelar stated, “The matter concerning the Mahim constituency is settled. Sada Sarvankar is now the candidate for the Mahayuti, and we will strive for his success. However, should the leaders of the Mahayuti partners, including the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, reach a different conclusion after thorough discussions, the situation may change.”

Shelar’s remarks have been met with enthusiasm from Sarvankar’s supporters, who are optimistic about attracting votes from non-Marathi communities, particularly among Jains, Gujaratis, and others.

The BJP’s decision to alter its position follows a series of sharp criticisms from Raj Thackeray directed at the Mahayuti on Monday, as well as his attacks on Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for collaborating with NCP leader Ajit Pawar in the government, despite previously denouncing him after his rebellion.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde held several meetings with Sarvankar seeking his views but the latter was reluctant to withdraw his nomination as he cited that MNS was not a part of the Mahayuti and his withdrawal would help the Shiv Sena (UBT) in a big way.

Amid mounting pressure from the BJP, the Chief Minister left the decision to Sarvankar and the Shiv Sainiks from Mahim constituency.

Thereafter, Sarvankar sought a meeting with Raj Thackeray on Monday before the time for withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 P.M.

However, after Raj Thackeray’s refusal to meet him, Sarvankar declared that he would contest from Mahim.

Sarvankar during his meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday said he has explained his stand to him.

“Even if I withdraw, there is no chance that Amit Thackeray will be elected. This I brought to the CM’s notice,” he added.

Sarvankar had pleaded with the Chief Minister that he should not become a victim as his victory was crucial in increasing the Mahayuti’s tally.

Sarvankar had also appealed to Raj Thackeray not to do injustice to him to support a common Shiv Sainik.

“I had thought of withdrawing from Mahim constituency on a condition that MNS should withdraw candidates so that more Mahayuti nominees win the elections. In some seats MNS has shown its willingness. However, I am saying that Amitji should be elected after I withdraw my nomination,” said Sarvankar.

“If I withdraw my nomination a third party (Shiv Sena-UBT) will benefit,” he added.

He claimed that grassroots BJP workers are with him and they will support him.
