Amid Rising Tensions, India Blocks All Imports from Pakistan After Pahalgam Incident
India Bans All Imports from Pakistan Amid Rising Tensions Over Pahalgam Terror Attack
In a strong and decisive move, India has imposed a complete ban on imports from Pakistan, citing national security and public policy concerns. The ban comes in the wake of the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including a Nepalese tourist and a local pony guide.
The Ministry of Commerce issued a formal notification stating:
“Direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan—regardless of their import status—shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further notice. Any exception will require prior approval from the Government of India.”
This sweeping trade ban includes goods already in transit and applies to all products without exception.
The Wagah-Attari border, the only land trade route between India and Pakistan, had already been closed following the Pahalgam massacre. Tensions between the two countries have sharply escalated as investigators traced the attack’s links back to Pakistan-based terror outfits.
In a further blow to bilateral relations, India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing agreement signed in 1960. Labeling the decision a response to “sustained cross-border terrorism,” officials indicated that India may now restrict or divert the Indus River waters, potentially cutting off a vital resource for millions in Pakistan.
These developments signal a hardening of India’s stance amid rising national outrage and calls for accountability after the brutal April 22 attack in the scenic Baisaran meadow.
