League Cup 2024-25: Spurs Defeat Manchester City, Manchester United Thrashes Leicester to Secure Quarterfinal Spots.

Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester City, with Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr contributing the goals. Meanwhile, interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy celebrated a resounding 5-2 triumph against Leicester City in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday.

Van Nistelrooy, a former striker for United, experienced a much-needed boost in his inaugural match at the helm, providing a welcome respite for Old Trafford following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag and a challenging period in the Premier League.

“I am here to help, to serve, and to give my all for the club; that will never change,” Van Nistelrooy remarked after his interim tenure commenced with an impressive performance, highlighted by midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro each netting two goals.

Spurs’ manager, Ange Postecoglou, remains optimistic about his commitment to securing a trophy in his second season, following an outstanding offensive display.

City made seven alterations to the lineup that had recently defeated Southampton 1-0, which allowed Spurs to exploit gaps early on. Dejan Kulusevski found Werner in the box, and the German forward struck decisively for his first goal of the season.

Sarr added a second goal in the 25th minute, receiving the ball outside the penalty area after a well-executed corner, and he skillfully curled it into the right-hand corner of the net.

City managed to score just before the end of the first half, with Matheus Nunes finding the net after connecting with a cross from Savinho, marking their first shot on target.

Despite having already lost several key players this season, City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his desire for the team to perform well without further injuries. Unfortunately, Savinho sustained an injury that required him to be carried off the field in the 62nd minute.

This setback disrupted City’s momentum; however, Nico O’Reilly nearly equalized late in the match, only for substitute Yves Bissouma to clear the ball off the line, allowing Spurs to secure their victory.

“It’s a cup tie against a strong opponent, and I believe we performed well for the most part,” Postecoglou remarked to Sky Sports.

“We limited their clear-cut chances, and while we had opportunities to secure the game, City will always apply pressure,” he added.

Cody Gakpo scored twice for Liverpool in their 3-2 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion, while Arsenal comfortably defeated Preston North End 3-0, eliminating the last non-Premier League team from the competition and securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Crystal Palace achieved a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa, and Newcastle United advanced to the last eight with a 2-0 home win over Chelsea, thanks to a goal from Alexander Isak and an own goal by Axel Disasi.

In the quarterfinals, Tottenham will face Manchester United, Arsenal will take on Crystal Palace, Newcastle will play against Brentford, and Liverpool will visit Southampton.
