European Film Awards: ‘Emilia Pérez’, ‘The Room Next Door’ Lead Nominations.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, and Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig have been announced as nominees for the 2024 European Film Awards (EFAs), as revealed by the organizers on Tuesday. The European Film Academy has revealed the nominees in significant categories for the 37th European Film Awards, which will take place in the picturesque Swiss city of Lucerne on December 7.

Leading the nominations are the French Oscar contender Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, and The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodovar, each securing four nominations. Both films are in contention for Best European Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress, with Karla Sofia Gascón nominated for her role in Emilia Pérez and Tilda Swinton for her performance in The Room Next Door.

Other notable contenders include Germany’s Oscar submission The Seed of the Sacred Fig, directed by exiled Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, which has received nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Several films have garnered two nominations, including Maura Delpero’s Italian Oscar entry Vermiglio, Halfdan Ullmann Tondel’s Norwegian Oscar contender Armand, as well as Andrea Arnold’s Bird and Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance.

This year marks the first time that films nominated for Best European Documentary and Best Animated Feature Film are also eligible for the Best European Film category, following new regulations introduced last summer.

As a result, the nominations for Best European Film have expanded, with Bye Bye Tiberias by Lina Soualem, Mati Diop’s Berlinale Golden Bear winner Dahomey, and Johan Grimonprez’s Soundtrack To A Coup d’Etat receiving nominations for both Best Documentary and Best Film.

In the animated film category, contenders include Flow by Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis and Sultan’s Dream by Spanish filmmaker Isabel Herguera.

The awards, determined by approximately 5,000 members of the Berlin-based European Film Academy from across Europe, are regarded as an indicator of which European films may gain traction during the U.S. awards season.

Last year’s winner of Best European Film, Anatomy of a Fall, received five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller, with director Justine Triet and co-writer Arthur Harari winning the Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

Both Emilia Pérez and The Room Next Door have received four nominations each, including categories for best European film and best director. The Seed of the Sacred Fig is nominated for best film, best director, and best screenwriter. The Substance is competing for the best film and best screenwriter awards. In the best actress category, Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Emilia Pérez, will contend against Renate Reinsve, Tilda Swinton for her performance in The Room Next Door, and Trine Dyrholm and Vic Carmen Sonne from The Girl With the Needle. For the best European actor award, Daniel Craig from Queer and Ralph Fiennes from Conclave are in competition with Franz Rogowski (Bird), Lars Eidinger (Dying), and Abou Sangare (Soulemayne’s Story).

The winners of the 2024 European Film Awards will be announced in Lucerne, Switzerland, on December 7.

Italian actress Isabella Rossellini, known for her roles in Conclave and Blue Velvet, will be honored with the European Achievement in World Cinema award, recognizing her lifetime contributions to the industry, during the ceremony.

NO OTHER LAND (Palestine, Norway) – a documentary film directed by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra, and Hamdan Ballal, produced by Fabien Greenberg, Bård Kjøge Rønning, Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Rachel Szor, and Hamdan Ballal.

SAVAGES (SAUVAGES) (Switzerland, France, Belgium) – an animated feature film directed by Claude Barras, produced by Nicolas Burlet, Laurence Petit, Barbara Letellier, Carole Scotta, Vincent Tavier, Hugo Deghilage, Annemie Degryse, and Olivier Glassey.

This year’s ceremony in Lucerne will mark the last time it takes place in December with the dates shifting to mid-January, starting with the 38th edition in 2026, as part of a strategy to position the prizes within the wider awards season conversation on both sides of the Atlantic.
