Haryana Assembly Election Update…

Leads from Haryana indicate that the Congress party is poised to establish a government in the state after a decade-long absence. As of 9:19 AM, the Congress is leading in 50 out of the 90 Assembly constituencies, while the BJP is ahead in 33.
A total of seven exit polls have forecasted that the Congress will secure 55 seats, surpassing the necessary majority of 45, whereas the BJP is projected to win 26 seats.
Celebrations commenced outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi even prior to the counting process, with party supporters engaging in dance accompanied by traditional dhol music. In contrast, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed optimism that the BJP will successfully form the government in Haryana for a third consecutive term.
Significant development efforts have been undertaken over the past decade. The system established by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar is expected to yield long-term benefits for Haryana. It is our duty to advance this commendable work,” stated Mr. Saini, who succeeded Mr. Khattar as chief minister in March, during a press briefing this morning.
In the 2019 assembly elections in Haryana, the BJP secured 40 seats, while the Congress obtained 31 and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) won 10. The BJP formed a government with the support of the JJP, leading to Dushyant Chautala’s appointment as deputy chief minister. This post-election alliance concluded with Mr. Saini’s ascension to the chief ministership.
The BJP managed to win only five out of the ten Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, having previously swept all of them in 2019. The upcoming assembly elections in Haryana, along with those in Jammu and Kashmir, present an opportunity for the party to demonstrate its continued popularity among voters, especially after not achieving a majority on its own in the general elections for the first time in a decade.
The stakes for the Congress party are arguably elevated, particularly given that it had been largely dismissed following significant losses in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Congress leaders have been referencing the party’s acquisition of 99 seats in the recent general elections, along with the performance of the INDIA alliance, to suggest a revival. The outcomes in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir are being interpreted as a critical assessment of this assertion.
